Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP Test) in New Mexico

What this test is

The Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) is a group of tests that measure various substances in your blood. It provides important information about your body's chemical balance and metabolism. This test is commonly used to assess glucose levels, electrolyte and fluid balance, and kidney function.

What it measures

• Glucose — reflects blood sugar levels
• Calcium — indicates bone and muscle health
• Sodium — shows fluid and electrolyte balance
• Potassium — affects heart and muscle function
• Chloride — helps maintain fluid balance
• Carbon dioxide (CO2) — indicates acid-base balance
• Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) — reflects kidney function
• Creatinine — measures kidney performance

What the test involves

The BMP involves a standard blood draw, typically from a vein in your arm. The collected blood sample is then analyzed in a laboratory.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order a BMP to help evaluate your overall health, especially if you are experiencing symptoms related to kidney function, blood sugar levels, or electrolyte imbalance. It is also used to monitor existing conditions or the effectiveness of treatments.

Preparation

Preparation for a BMP may require fasting. Always follow the specific instructions provided by the collection lab for accurate results.

How results are reported

Results from a BMP are typically reported as a series of values for each component tested. Reference ranges can vary by laboratory, so it's important to discuss your results with a healthcare provider.
