What this test is

This test measures the level of IgE antibodies in the blood that are specific to crab proteins. It helps identify a potential allergic reaction to crab, a type of shellfish. The presence of these antibodies suggests an immune response to crab exposure.

What it measures

  • Crab-specific IgE — reflects the immune system's response to crab proteins

What the test involves

The test involves a standard blood draw, where a healthcare professional collects a sample from a vein in your arm. The sample is then analyzed for specific IgE antibodies.

Why it is often ordered

Clinicians typically order this test if there are symptoms suggestive of a crab allergy, such as hives, itching, or difficulty breathing after eating crab. It helps in confirming whether crab is the trigger for these allergic reactions.

Preparation

Preparation for the test may vary, so it is important to follow the specific instructions provided by the collection lab.

How results are reported

Results indicate the level of IgE antibodies specific to crab, and whether they suggest an allergy. Reference ranges differ between laboratories, so results should be interpreted in context.
